Operation Cover UP |
|
Keen knitters from around New Zealand are being called to take up their needles for ‘Operation Cover Up’. A recent visit by a Missionary group Child Recuse International, under the auspices of Mission Without Borders, revealed that children living in Moldovan Orphanages have little bedding in temperatures as low as minus 25°C.
An article was placed in the local papers looking for people who: knitted or crocheted, would like to donate wool or were prepared to join squares into blankets. ![]() They originally hoped for 67 blankets to cover one orphanage, but were delighted that the final total was 240 blankets!! That response far exceeded their expectations. People were kept up-to-date with progress through the local papers and a coffee morning was held to thank ladies for their support. Encouraged by the enthusiasm of people in their own town, they felt sure that other towns in New Zealand would like to carry on the momentum of what had been started in Taupo, as it had mushroomed far beyond their original expectations For those involved it gave a sense of being able to help these children so far away whose needs were so great. In the year 2005 there were over 80 coordinators through out New Zealand and the range of artlices going to these needy children has greatly diversified. From Blankets to Quilts to (New) toothbrushes to sports equipment and Stationery to name a few |
